WordPress still does not ship a full contact form. That is fine — the plugin ecosystem covers everything from a three-field inquiry box to multi-page applications with payments and CRM handoffs. The hard part is picking a builder that is still maintained, matches how you actually work, and will not turn spam into a second job.
This rewrite drops tools that are retired or gone from sale, and keeps builders we can still verify as live. 1. WPForms
Best for: site owners who want a real drag-and-drop builder without learning markup.

WPForms is the default recommendation when someone asks for “a contact form that will not fight me.” The Lite version on WordPress.org is enough for a Name / Email / Message form, templates, honeypot-style spam tools, and basic entry views. Pro unlocks conditional logic, multi-page forms, file uploads, surveys, and payment fields (Stripe, PayPal, Square depending on plan).
What stands out in day-to-day use is the onboarding: templates get you publishing in minutes, and the builder stays readable when you add more fields. Pricing is subscription-based. Introductory discounts are common; renewals usually return to the full list price, so budget for that if you are comparing year-two cost against Gravity Forms.
Choose WPForms when the goal is a polished contact or lead form quickly. Look elsewhere if you need calculator-style apps or directory-style front-end Views — Formidable is stronger there.
2. Gravity Forms
Best for: developers and agencies building complex, long-lived form systems.

Gravity Forms remains the “serious project” form plugin. There is no free plugin on WordPress.org. Licenses start at Basic ($59/year, 1 site), then Pro ($159/year, 3 sites), and Elite ($259/year, unlimited sites). Those numbers are the published list prices — renewals stay flat, which is easier to plan than steep first-year promo pricing elsewhere.
Strengths: conditional logic, multi-page flows, entry limits, file uploads, and a deep add-on ecosystem (payment gateways, CRM, user registration, surveys, conversational forms on higher tiers). The admin UI is denser than WPForms, but once a form is in production it tends to stay stable for years.
Skip Gravity Forms for a simple brochure contact page unless you already standardize on it across client sites. There is no free Lite tier to dabble with.

3. Contact Form 7
Best for: developers who want free, lightweight markup-style forms.

Contact Form 7 still has enormous install reach and ships updates regularly. You manage forms with tag-style field markup rather than a full visual canvas. That is a feature if you like precise control and a small footprint; it is friction if you want templates and a point-and-click layout.
Important limits: by default it does not store entries in the database the way modern builders do — mail goes out, and that is largely the product. Spam protection usually means pairing it with Akismet, reCAPTCHA/Turnstile, or a third-party add-on. Deliverability still depends on your host and SMTP setup; if messages vanish, fix that first (see email deliverability in WordPress).
Use CF7 when you need several simple forms, are comfortable editing tags, and want zero license cost. Move on when you need payments, CRM mapping, or entry management without stitching plugins together.
4. Formidable Forms
Best for: calculators, quizzes, directories, and forms that become mini applications.

Formidable’s free Lite plugin covers basic contact forms with a drag-and-drop builder and entry storage. Pro is where it separates from “just another contact form”: calculated fields, Views (display submitted data on the front end), repeaters, and application-style workflows.
If your brief is “contact us,” Formidable can feel like overkill. If the brief is “quote calculator that writes results to a directory page,” it earns its keep. Pricing follows the common first-year discount pattern; check renewal rates before you commit for multi-year budgets.
5. Ninja Forms
Best for: teams that want a free core and paid add-ons only for the features they use.

Ninja Forms ships a capable free builder with drag-and-drop fields and submission management in the dashboard. Advanced pieces — payments, many CRM connectors, some layout features — sit behind individual add-ons or annual bundles.
That pricing model is flexible and occasionally expensive. If you only need a contact form and CSV exports, the free core may be enough. If you stack five add-ons à la carte, a competing all-in-one Pro plan can be cheaper. Bundles (Plus / Pro / Elite) package the common sets; watch renewal pricing the same way you would with WPForms.
6. Quform
Best for: a one-time CodeCanyon license with a polished live builder.

CodeCanyon: Quform – WordPress Form Builder
WordPress.org: none (premium Envato product)
Quform sits in a different budget shape than WPForms or Gravity Forms: you buy it once on CodeCanyon (listed around $34 at the time we checked), get lifetime updates for that license, and six months of included support (extendable). The builder is drag-and-drop with theming controls, entry management in wp-admin, conditional logic, and spam options including honeypot and reCAPTCHA.
It is a strong fit for freelancers who prefer not to renew a SaaS-style form license every year, and for sites that need more than Contact Form 7 without agency-tier complexity. One regular license covers one WordPress install — plan licenses accordingly for client work.

7. ARForms
Best for: visually rich forms, popups, and multi-step layouts from a CodeCanyon-style product line.

ARForms markets itself as an all-in-one builder: real-time editing, material-style designs, multi-step forms, built-in popup triggers, analytics-style entry charts, and a long list of marketing/payment add-ons. Vendor pricing on arformsplugin.com lists a Pro tier around $39 (verify at checkout — Envato and direct prices can differ).
Worth knowing: the free WordPress.org “ARForms Form Builder” listing was closed for guideline reasons, so treat CodeCanyon or the official store as the source of truth for downloads and updates. That is a maintenance signal to watch — stay on current releases and keep backups before major WordPress upgrades.

8. Contact Form by BestWebSoft
Best for: a straightforward free contact form with optional Pro extras from a long-running plugin shop.

WordPress.org: contact-form-plugin
BestWebSoft’s Contact Form is smaller in mindshare than WPForms or CF7, but it is still updated and lists recent compatibility work with current WordPress versions. You get shortcode or block placement, label edits, attachments, optional multi-column layout, and GDPR-oriented checkboxes. Multiple distinct forms and database storage lean on their companion plugins (Contact Form Multi, Contact Form to DB).
It is a reasonable free alternative when you want a settings-screen workflow instead of CF7 tags, and you do not need a full application builder. Check recent support threads and changelog notes before rolling it onto a high-traffic site — like any mid-tier free plugin, patch cadence matters.
What we removed from the old list
- Pirate Forms — acquired by WPForms years ago and no longer under active feature development. Migrate to WPForms Lite/Pro instead of installing Pirate Forms on a new site.
- Visual Form Builder — last meaningful WordPress.org update in 2022; the directory warns it has not been tested with the latest major WordPress releases. Author notes for VFB Pro also flag discontinued support. Do not start new projects on it.
- Ninja Kick Sidebar (Contact Form) — the CodeCanyon item page for the contact-form product returns gone (HTTP 410). Related Ninja Kick products still exist (subscription / bundle), but the contact-form listing we used historically is no longer a buyable Envato item, so it does not belong on a “best of” list.
How to choose without overthinking it
- Simple contact page, free: WPForms Lite or Contact Form 7.
- Leads + marketing integrations, willing to subscribe: WPForms Pro or Ninja Forms + the add-ons you need.
- Complex logic, payments, long-term agency stack: Gravity Forms.
- Data display, calculators, front-end Views: Formidable Forms.
- Prefer a one-time Envato license: Quform first; ARForms if you specifically want popups and heavily styled multi-step forms.
Whatever you pick, prove that mail leaves the server (SMTP if needed), turn on spam protection before you announce the page, and keep a single primary form plugin — running two builders doubles scripts and support noise for no gain. Final remarks
Contact forms are infrastructure, not decoration. The winning plugin is the one your team will actually maintain: clear notifications, spam under control, and updates that keep pace with WordPress. WPForms and Gravity Forms cover most professional needs from opposite directions (ease vs depth). Contact Form 7 remains the free classic for markup-friendly setups. Formidable and Ninja Forms fill the “forms as product” and “modular add-ons” niches. Quform and ARForms still make sense when a one-time CodeCanyon purchase fits the budget better than another annual SaaS license.
We dropped Pirate Forms, Visual Form Builder, and the dead Ninja Kick contact-form listing so this page stops recommending abandonware. After you choose a plugin, follow the setup guide linked above, send a real test from a private window, and only then wire the page into your menu.
