Tom Ewer said in The top 100 WordPress blogs call for votes that “In order for a blog to be considered, it must dedicate the majority of its content (i.e. >50%) to WordPress-related topics. If you planning to run Multi site through WordPress, there are some steps that need to be taken in order to get everything set up correctly. It is important that you follow these steps throughly, otherwise your additional sites simply won’t work.

When it comes to create or Convert WordPress into multiple WordPress sites, Look at this tutorial “How to enable Multi Site feature in WordPress 3.0?“, which tell you how to set up everything. Creating New Network Sites:

After converting your site into Multi Sites Network, Follow these steps to add new sites to your network.

1. Go to Super Admin by Click on “Network Admin” at the Top right of your WordPress Admin area.

2. You are now in the Networking admin Dashboard, and Click on Create a New Site.

3. Fill out all required field for your new blog, e.g. the Site Address field, a Site Title, and Admin Email. Click Add Site to finish the creation. Now you can see the new site added under Network Sites link. You can visit new site by Clicking “Visit” link on your new site.

4. You can edit to change the setting for your new site by Clicking on “Edit” link. Aloso you can see User for this site and are able to edit them.

Plugins on Your Multi Sites Network:

Install theme normally as you do on Single WordPress site. Its up to Super Admin to give permission for the usage of particular theme. Under Network Admin click on Themes and check Network Enable or Disable link for the themes you want to be available to the network site:

How to manipulate image sizes to speed up WordPress blog load times

Loading time of web site directly impact users and ranking position. As compare to text, images take more time to load and search engines indexed those web pages which have less load time and user spend time that give good impression to search engines.

To load your image fast, you will have to optimize images by manipulating their size. I recommend you to use compression of images to light up your sites’ load. To load quickly your web pages images, make smaller image in size. Here are a few simple rules— they will help you minimize image sizes and will reduce the loading times. Image File Formats:

Never use BMP file, because there is no space on web page for them now.
GIF formate is the most best if you are not using photograph in your image, because GIF support few colors and photographs need thousand of colors.
JPG is the best option, if you have large image. You can control its quality and its copression property. So compressed it as your requirement. Open and Save your JPG file in Paint will reduce the file size.
PNG format is ideal for both solid colors and photographs. They display abetter image quality than JPG files.

With Adobe Photoshop always use its feature called “Save for the web”, it will reduce the image size and load time substantially. An other open source alternative Gimp, you can get high-quality images that look identical to the big master files. As well, you can try the Online Image Optimizer or JPEG Wizard for free optimization of your images on the internet!

Images for Search Engines:

Search engines special Google Image Search is the most efficient tools to drive more traffic and more leads to your website. By using the following techniques you can increase the ranking of the images on your websites, that ultimately will increase your web site traffic.

Always use Appropriate Images: Use your own or try to search on Google according to your requirement and image must be relevant to your post content. Ask permission if needed.
Optimize your images as explained above
Give the proper name to your image and better to use keyword as a name.

English and Writing Tips for Creative Blogging

I have read from Apress eBook “Creative Blogging: Your First Steps to a Successful Blog“ about English Writing tips to share with you regarding writing blog posts. Note that the rules that apply to writing blog posts are different and much less strict than those that apply to writing academic or formal papers, resumes, or business correspondence. In general, your tone is informal, relaxed, and conversational, and you speak to your blog readers as to a friend. This is not intended to be an English 101 class, but to review a few practices to help you write better posts:

1. Use a conversational tone. As previously stated, your writing should be relaxed and informal. You don’t have to worry about an editor reviewing your work or that your sentences are structured perfectly. This book is written in a conversational tone as I speak to you about blogging in a friendly manner (not as your professor or English teacher).

2. Keep track of your tenses (past/present/future). If you’re writing about the past, keep it in the past, and the same goes for the present and future. Nothing makes writing more difficult to follow than a jumble of tenses.

3. Me or I. If you are writing or speaking about yourself, use “I” as in “Billy, Mary, and I are going to the mall.” Use “me” when you’re receiving an action, such as “Charlie gave me the game ball.” or “My mother is angry with me for staying out late.”

4. Numbers. You can use either digits or words to write a number (10 or ten, for example) in the body of a sentence, so which you use is up to you. However, the first word or letter of a sentence should be capitalized so you shouldn’t use a
number there unless you write it out (Ten).

5. Using commas. Unfortunately, some writers use commas to combine too many thoughts into one sentence. It’s better to use shorter, simpler sentences than to create run-on sentences.

6. Its and it’s. In general, “it’s” is a substitute for “it is,” as in “It’s cold outside.” “Its,” on the other hand, is a form of ownership—“An elephant uses its trunk to pick up food.”

7. Apostrophes. In following the rules of ownership, in most cases you would use an apostrophe “s” such as “Heather’s jacket is red with black trim.” However, if the noun is plural, use just an apostrophe, as in “The princesses’ crowns sparkled with diamonds.”

8. Quotations and ending punctuation. In general, keep the period, question mark, exclamation point or other punctuation inside the quotation marks. While blogging, chances are you won’t use many direct quotes that require quotation marks, but if you are specifically quoting someone else’s work, you should certainly credit them in some way (remember the saying “give credit where credit is due”).

9. Proofreading. In addition to using a spelling and grammar checker, be sure to proof read your work. If you inadvertently use the wrong word, but it’s a real word, chances are good that neither the spell checker nor the grammar checker will pick it up. So don’t forget to reread your work before posting. It’s even better to have someone else read your work!

How to Handle: Warning! WordPress encrypts user cookies in Multisite

After setting up Multisite You can get the following warning at the top of every admin page:

Warning! WordPress encrypts user cookies, but you must add the following lines to wp-config.php for it to be more secure.
Before the line /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */ please add this code:
define( 'AUTH_KEY', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' );
define( 'SECURE_AUTH_KEY', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' );
define( 'LOGGED_IN_KEY', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' );
define( 'NONCE_KEY', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' );

Where xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx means unique key which will generated automatically for you.

Also if you upgraded from WordPress WPMU to 3.1 and you can get the same error “Warning! WordPress encrypts user cookies, but you must add the following lines…” warning telling you to add the lines to my wp-config.php file.

Solution:

There are 8 lines total that need to be included in the wp-config file on multisite consisting of both SALT and KEY codes.

There’s a KEY 4 line block AND a SALT 4 line block.

Having only ever seen the KEY version before in working with non-multisite WP, I did not notice a difference.

But after looking in detail I found that there are 8 lines not four. So Follow these steps.

Cause: WordPress is not saving the salt keys.

Fix:

Method 1:

Open wp-config.php file

Find the lines for AUTH_KEY, SECURE_AUTH_KEY, LOGGED_IN_KEY, and NONCE_KEY and delete them.

Save your wp-config.php file.

Log back into the WordPress Dashboard and you should be given 8 new lines of keys.

Copy the lines and paste them in your wp-config.php file.

Save the file.

Clear your cache and refresh.

You can generate these key from the following link https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/

The developers are working continually to keep it ahead of spammers and hackers, and also to evolve the application based on the evolving needs of its users.

In addition to having an extremely strong core, WordPress is also quite extend-able. This means that once you get started with it, the possibilities are nearly limitless. Any additional functionality that you can dream of can be added by means of a plugin that you or your programmer friends can write. In the following sections, I’ve mentioned most outstanding features of WordPress 3.1(Reinhardt).

The long-awaited fourteenth release of WordPress is now available. WordPress 3.1 “Reinhardt” is named in honor of the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Version 3.1 is available for download, or you can update from within your dashboard.

1. Post Formats Support

The central activity you’ll be doing with your blog is adding posts. A post is like an article in a magazine. If a blog is like an online diary, then every post is an entry in that diary. A blog post also has a lot of other information attached to it, such as a date, excerpt, tags, and categories. An exciting new feature in WordPress 3.1 is the addition of Post Formats. Post Formats can be used by theme authors to customize the way a WordPress post is presented on the web. Theme designers can style the “link formats” to be displayed in a different way like Chris Coyier & Jeff Starr has for Digging into WordPress.

2. WordPress Admin Bar:

Most interesting part of WordPress 3.1 for any average WordPress user is admin bar which will make your work easier and one can easily use admin control from any page of your blog, once you are logged into dashboard.

3. Internal Linking in WordPress

4. Admin Ajaxification and Sortable Columns

Another great enhancement in WordPress 3.1 is the interaction with the WordPress admin. It’s no secret that WordPress doesn’t use Ajax much on the back end. Hopefully, this update should smooth out the pagination when we will browse posts in the admin. It should also provide advanced search and sorting functionality.

This upgraded will make the way you browse and administer your WordPress themes much easier. The current system is a bit clunky, and they hope to do away with it completely and replace it with an improved version.

How to Move a WordPress Site from one Server to another

If you ever need to move your WordPress installation from one server to another, start by reversing the
installation process.

Step 1: Download the WordPress files from your server. Make sure you have a complete copy of your
wp-config.php and .htaccess files and your wp-content directory.
Step 2: Export your database. If you have installed any plugins that create new tables, be sure to
include them in your backup. They will share the prefix (e.g. ‘wp_’) you specified during the installation.

You can install Austin Matzko’s WP-DB-Backup plugin (WP-DB-Backup)or use your host’s control panel (e.g.
PHPMyAdmin) to export your WordPress database.

Step 3: Put your old site into maintenance mode so your visitors can’t continue to submit comments
and trackbacks to your old database. Maintenance Mode plugin (Option 1, Option 2) works well.

Step 4: Edit your wp-config.php file. Change the database connection settings to correspond with the values on your new server. You should also define your site and blog URLs in the configuration file, This will override the settings in your database so you can log in on your new server. (Otherwise, WordPress would constantly redirect you to your old site!) See Editing wp-config.php for details on these and other advanced configuration settings.

Step 5: Upload your files, including the modified wp-config.php, to your new web server.

Step 6: Import the database backup you made in Step 2 to your database on your new server using your new web host’s control panel tools.

Step 7: Log in to your WordPress site at its new location (e.g. wparena.com/wp-admin).

Step 8: If you changed your site’s URL, your posts and pages probably contain many hardcoded

paths to your uploaded media files. Use the Search and Replace plugin (Search and Replace) to change these to your new URL, as shown bellow.

How to Expand/collapse WordPress posts with jQuery

WordPress has the feature which make the post “Condensable” for the main post view page, but sometime that feature doe not fulfill the requirement.

I’d like the user to have the option to expand the post that interests him, while keeping him in the context of all the other post headlines. This is a very popular jQuery enhancement. Let’s take a look at how we’d do that. Set up a clean custom-jquery.js file in your theme and let’s get started.

First, hide the post content:

jQuery(“.post .entry-content”).hide();?

Next, it would be very inefficient to have an editor add a control element to each post. So, we could add it to the theme’s post.php page, but then, the control would appear even if the user had JavaScript disabled. We want this
to degrade gracefully, it’s an enhancement after all.
If someone comes across this content in a mobile browser without JavaScript support or a text-only or text-to-speech browser, we’ll want them to just view the content as normal without any non-functional elements distracting them. We’ll use jQuery to add our control element. If JavaScript is disabled, it simply won’t appear.

We now just need a nice way to show and hide the post’s content:
